Seckinger

A true Palatinate success story: the Seckingers have only been producing their own wine since 2012; before that, the father supplied grapes to renowned winemakers in Deidesheim. But two (of the three) sons studied oenology in Geisenheim and showed great interest in making wine themselves. Jonas Seckinger also completed an apprenticeship at the Odinstal Winery, where he gained valuable exposure to biodynamic viticulture. In the 2018 issue of Falstaff, he was named one of the “Newcomers of the Year” and recognized as one of the Palatinate’s most promising young winemakers. Together with his two brothers, Philipp and Lukas, they now cultivate 14 hectares of vineyards organically in the tranquil village of Niederkirchen. All wines—after varying maceration periods—are fermented spontaneously and with virtually no pre-clarification (which provides the natural yeasts with a greater supply of nutrients), usually in large wooden barrels, and aged on the full lees. Filtration and sulfur addition are used only in exceptional cases and kept to a minimum. The result is natural wines with character—nothing is added, and nothing is taken away.

»“Treating nature, the vines, and our soils with responsibility and respect is the essence and soul of our natural wines,” says Jonas Seckinger. The Seckinger Winery’s most important vineyards are located around Deidesheim: Kieselberg, Langenmorgen, Leinhöhle, Maushöhle, and Paradiesgarten. In Königsbach, there is the Ölberg, and in Ruppertsberg, the Reiterpfad. The soil types here range from red sandstone with varying amounts of loess-loam and gravel to limestone-rich sites in Königsbach. The three brothers have made it their mission to reclaim old, overgrown terraced vineyards on the Haardt and replant them with Riesling. One of these sites, “rediscovered” in 2014, is called Deidesheimer Petershöhle—a long-abandoned terraced vineyard directly surrounded by forest. Even the winery’s very first vintages have received impressive awards. Right next to the mountainous town of Deidesheim, a new avant-garde of winemakers is emerging almost in secret; in Niederkirchen, the wineries Fußer, Scheuermann, Reinhardt, and Seckinger are tucked away. These are easygoing, cosmopolitan, and resourceful young people who take a radical approach to wine and terroir—and trial and error is an essential part of that. This is the exception rather than the rule in a region where wines have become increasingly predictable.
