Furmint

The white grape native to Hungary. The name probably derives from the Italian town of Formia in Lazio. Synonyms are Sipon (Slovenia, Croatia), Furmint, Zopfner (Germany) or Tokay (France), however, has nothing in common with the Italian Tocai Friulano variety.
Younger DNA analysis according to the Furmint probably comes from a natural cross between Heunisch and the Romanian variety "Alba Imputotato". The late-ripening vine produces golden yellow, extra-rich white wines with high acidity and alcohol content and is susceptible to botrytis (noble rot), but is so perfect for the sweet wine production. In Hungary, the variety is planted on more than 4,100 acres, most of it in the field in Tokaj, where it occupies almost two-thirds of the vineyards and the main places for the most famous Hungarian wine, the Tokaji is. In Austria, there are only 9 acres in and around Rust, in Slovenia it has something more important with 650 hectares.
