The two main grape varieties, Grüner Veltliner and Riesling, have defined the Kamptal DAC since it was established in 2008. The region-typical wines with the Kamptal DAC designation must be made exclusively from the varieties Grüner Veltliner or Riesling. The additional "Reserve" stands especially for deeper, weightier DAC wines.
The Heiligenstein is one of the Kamptal´s most prominent sites, with its very special soil: desert sandstone with volcanic components dating back to the Paleozoic era, 270 million years ago. On the steep terraces of the southern slope, mainly Riesling is grown and brings vigorous, long living wines. Closer to the Danube, the soils change. Here, the loess and loam terraces help provide optimal conditions for a wide range of wines. Along with Grüner Veltliner, the Burgundy family as well as the Blaue Zweigelt show their true strength. And climatically, the dynamic between the hot, Pannonian basin and the cool Waldviertel is impressive.
